Professional Family Services

Professional Family Services are provided in the Uusimaa (around Helsinki) and Kymi (some 200 km east of Helsinki) regions. The unit supplies and develops the services, which are provided to families at home.

Services can be purchased by families, municipalities and organizations in the regions. They meet the family’s individual needs and are solution-oriented.

Professional family services include family work and care for children in vulnerable circumstances or with injuries and chronic illnesses. They are provided when families need assistance in child care and support in coping with every day life and may be short-term, regular, or long-term.

Family work plans can be drawn up together by the family, family workers and a representative of local social services. They are followed through and assessed and updated continuously.

Points of Departure for Professional Family Services

  • Support for parents in coping with everyday stress
  • Priority on the well-being of children
  • Referral of families to social work and health care services when necessary

Professional family services are financed by municipal health and social welfare authorities, either through fixed-term agreements or with vouchers.

The services were used by 259 families with more than 1000 children. A total of 4650 family visits were made and more than 24,200 hours of care were recorded.
